THE HAGUE, 6 July 2001. Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui, former President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), will resign as a Member of the Court as of 30 September
2001.
The term of Judge Bedjaoui as Member of the Court would have expired on 5 February 2006.
The United Nations Security Council has fixed 12 October 2001 as the date for the election of his successor by the Security Council and the General Assembly. The newly
appointed Member of the Court will complete Judge Bedjaoui's term, serving until 2006.
A Member of the Court since 19 March 1982, Judge Bedjaoui was its President from 1994 to 1997. Further, from 1983 to 1987 he served as President of the ad hoc Chamber formed
by the Court to deal with the case concerning the Frontier Dispute (Burkina Faso/Republic of Mali).
A former Minister of Justice and ambassador of Algeria to France and then to the United Nations in New York, Judge Bedjaoui is a member of several learned bodies. He is the
author of eight books and more than 200 articles.
